Character is like a tree and reputation is its shadow. The shadow is what we think of but the tree is the real thing.” – Abraham Lincoln
Good character my dear Children, is not given to us. We have to build it piece by piece. Integrity is the backbone of any strong character. It is trustworthiness, honesty and uprightness of character. People with integrity are always valued because we know that they will always act honourably and do what is right. A person with sound character will never do wrong even if he knows there is no chance of his being caught. One should be respectful towards others. Respect is honouring the worth and dignity of all people. Those who respect others treat them with fairness and courtesy. They treat others the way they want to be treated. You must treat all people fairly; be open minded, listen to others and try to understand what they are saying and feeling. Tell the truth, be sincere and don’t mislead others. You must always stand by your beliefs and resist negative peer pressure. Moreover, you must always be courteous and polite and judge people on their merits. Be tolerant and appreciative and accept individual differences. Whatever you may choose to become, dear Children, your success will meet fulfilment only if you are endowed values which go into making your character. It is your values that define you. Remember always, that in your race to reach the top, to climb to the zenith, you don’t part with your values which are priceless for if you part with them, you will nullify your accomplishments. Values merely perceived are valueless; they have to be live to make your life purposeful. These principles are the basis for developing an excellent personal value system. They will help you to develop solid friendships, a good career and a foundation for good reputation and integrity. Stays committed to your values and grow up to be responsible citizens of tomorrow.
